ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday officially opened a cable car project in Duhok province which aims to diversify the economy of the Kurdistan Region.
“In the government plan, we had two main objectives, one was reform, and the other is diversifying the economy of Kurdistan,” PM Barzani said in a speech at the opening ceremony of cable car project on Duhok’s Zawa Mountain.
“As the government, we have made an effort to increase tourism projects in Kurdistan, along with other projects,” he added.
The cable car, a $30-million project run by UB Holding, takes visitors to the top of Duhok’s Zawa mountain in 10 minutes, according to the company’s media manager Jalal Muhammad, who said each of the 26 cars can carry eight people.
“This project will greatly serve the tourism sector in Duhok,” said Duhok governor Ali Tatar said. “Duhok deserves to be the capital of tourism in Iraq and Kurdistan Region.”
