ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdish and Iraqi federal security forces arrested three suspected drug traffickers and seized five kilograms of crystal meth in a joint operation in Erbil, an Iraqi official said on Saturday.
“The Salahaddin Directorate of Narcotics Affairs, in high-level coordination with the Erbil Directorate of Narcotics Control, dealt a crippling blow to drug trafficking networks,” Abbas Bahadli, spokesperson for Iraq’s General Directorate of Narcotics Affairs, told Rudaw’s Malik Mohammed.
The operation was carried out in Erbil and resulted in the arrest of three suspects.
“Three main suspects and the seizure of five kilograms of crystal meth,” Bahadli said of the outcome of the operation.
“The suspects were caught in the act following close intelligence surveillance,” he added.
Kurdistan Region and Iraqi federal authorities have increased cooperation in recent years to combat drug trafficking, amid growing concerns over the spread of narcotics across Iraq.
“This joint operation demonstrates the unification of efforts to confront drug traffickers,” Bahadli said.
