ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Russia's Ambassador to Iraq Elbrus Kutrashev in Erbil on Tuesday, discussing relations between Russia, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, as well as regional developments and the US-Iran agreement. Russia's Consul General in the Kurdistan Region was also in attendance.
“Discussions centered on strengthening Russian ties with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the evolving relationship between Erbil and Baghdad,” read the statement from the Kurdistan Region President’s Office.
Both leaders “underscored the importance of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding as the path forward in resolving pending issues between the two administrations.”
The talks followed the recent US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland, where both sides agreed to pursue a final agreement within 60 days after mediators reported progress in efforts to end months of regional tensions and military confrontation.
They also discussed their views on the US-Iran agreement, “expressing hope that the discussions would lead to a durable, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region” amid ongoing efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Russia has maintained diplomatic and economic ties with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the energy sector, while Moscow continues to play a significant role in regional and international affairs.
