ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The United States will announce additional changes to its security policies, President Donald Trump said during a press conference from the White House with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
"We'll be doing something very rapidly having to do with additional security for our country," he said on Friday. "You’ll see something sometime next week.”
A federal appeals court earlier this week agreed with a lower court, rejecting Trump’s order that had cancelled immigrant and nonimmigrant visas into the United States for 90 days for people from nine Muslim-majority countries including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
"There is no precedent to support this claimed unreviewability, which runs contrary to the fundamental structure of our constitutional democracy," the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said in its 3-0 decision which noted that the states had raised serious allegations about religious discrimination.
Trump called it a “disgraceful decision.”
Trump and the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had their first official phone call late Thursday night, and Abadi used the opportunity to address the travel ban.
Abadi “stressed the importance of a review of the decision on the right of Iraqis to travel to the United States and lift Iraq from the list of countries mentioned in the executive order,” a statement on the PM’s website read. “Mr. Trump stressed the importance of coordination to find a solution to this issue as soon as possible and that he will direct the US State Department in this regard.”
The prime minister also reiterated his country’s support to defeat “Daesh terrorist gangs” using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.
