ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Internal security forces (Asayish) of northeast Syria (Rojava) on Saturday said they had arrested a facilitator of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the notorious al-Hol camp amid an ongoing security operation.
“The member of ISIS nicknamed Abu Abdul Hamid was arrested inside al-Hol camp. He is responsible for spreading extremism among the ranks of children and has connections with the legitimate leaders of ISIS outside the camp,” Asayish said on X.
The third phase of an anti-ISIS operation, dubbed Operation Humanity and Security, was carried out inside al-Hol camp which houses thousands of suspects with links to ISIS. The operation was conducted in response to increased jihadist activity in Rojava.
The first phase of the military campaign was launched in March 2021 and the second one in August 2022. Hundreds of ISIS suspects were detained in both phases.
Located in Hasaka province, al-Hol has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism, with authorities describing it as a “ticking time bomb.” Camp residents come from various countries, but Iraqis and Syrians make up the bulk.
In late December, the SDF announced that a senior ISIS official was killed inside the camp after clashing with security forces.
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who control northeast Syria, fought the lion’s share of the battle against ISIS and arrested thousands of the terror group’s fighters along with their wives and children when they crushed ISIS territorially and took the group’s last stronghold in Syria in 2019.
Nearly 50,000 ISIS-linked people are kept in the notorious al-Hol camp in Hasaka province, while thousands of others are kept in Roj camp.
