ERBIL, Kurdistan Region —  A member of an international humanitarian organization was killed and another wounded on Sunday when their team reportedly came under Turkish-backed force shelling close to the town of Tel Tamr, northern Syria.

The Free Burma Rangers named the slain medic and cameraman as Burmese national Zau Seng.

"We are very sad to announce that Zau Seng, our Kachin cameraman and medic from Burma, was killed today, Nov. 3., by a Free Syrian Army/Turkish Army mortar strike that hit our forward casualty collection point where we were assembled to treat the wounded," said a statement posted to the Rangers' website.

The strike took place four kilometers north of Tel Tamr, detailed the statement. The wounded team member, an Iraqi coordinator, is receiving treatment at a hospital in Hasaka, according to Rudaw's Roj Eli Zalla.

The Free Burma Rangers are a non-profit organization delivering emergency medical assistance to those in need in northern Syria, where Turkey's Operation Peace Spring against Kurdish-led forces is currently in full force.

Spokesperson for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mustafa Bali tweeted in response to the news, calling Seng a "hero."
