ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani late Saturday arrived in New York to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), his office announced.

“The Prime Minister will deliver Iraq’s speech before the General Assembly, and will also deliver a speech at the Summit of the Future, in which many heads of state and presidents will participate, and which is focused on enhancing cooperation, facing challenges, and affirming commitments,” Sudani’s office said in a statement.

He will also hold meetings and bilateral talks with a number of world leaders and presidents, his office added, and among his agenda is a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The Summit of the Future will be held on September 22 and 23 to “address the critical challenges and gaps in global governance exposed by recent global shocks,” the UN said.

The theme for this year’s week-long UNGA is “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” according to the UN.

This year’s UNGA comes as conflicts rage in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and other countries, and amid intensifying hostilities and clashes between Israel and Lebanon – sparking fears of an all-out war.
