ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A delegation from the Kurdistan Region’s ruling party met with an influential Iraqi Shiite politician on Monday to discuss the formation of Iraq’s new government following the announcement of the official parliamentary results as well as the challenges the country is facing.

Headed by Hoshyar Zebari, a delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) met with the head of National Wisdom Movement to discuss politics and the formation of the new government, state media reported.

The senior KDP member and Hakim stressed the importance of “forming a government based on a stable and solid equation that is capable of achieving executive and legislative balance.”

Iraq held a parliamentary election on October 10. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the official results on November 30, after resolving all of the complaints submitted by objecting parties.

Iran-backed parties, most notably the Fatih Alliance, emerged as one of the major losers in the parliamentary election, according to the official results. The parties alleged fraud and issued statements rejecting the results. The alliance has submitted six reports to the court that show “technical and legal violations” committed in the vote.

Hakim also discussed the political situation in Iraq with Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani on Sunday, the Shiite politician said in a tweet.

Hakim ran in the recent election in the newly formed National State Force Alliance, led by him and former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. They won four seats only.

The alliance has also signed the statement rejecting the final election results.

He met with the KDP leader Masoud Barzani and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani last month.

The KDP tied for third place with 31 seats, yet again holding the position as the largest Kurdish party in the Iraqi parliament, the final results showed. It has opened government formation talks with a wide number of parties. A KDP delegation last month visited Sulaimani where they met separately with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Change Movement (Gorran), and the Kurdistan Socialist Democratic Party. A delegation also visited Baghdad in early November to meet with Iraqi parties.
