ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Head of the UN assistance mission in Iraq said on Saturday that Iraq has good and “balanced” relations with all countries, denying reports that the country is under theat.
“No, there are no threats. I have not heard about threats on Iraq,” UNAMI chief Mohamed al-Hassan told Rudaw when asked about reports that the new American administration will impose sanctions on Iraq.
“I have not heard about any threats directed at Iraq at all. Iraq is a country that has good and balanced relations with all countries, including the United States of America. They are based on [mutual] interests,” he elaborated.
Trump is set to take office on January 20.
Iraq-based militia groups are part of the Tehran-backed Axis of Resistance which has been weakened in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria in recent months.
Iraq, alarmed by the collapse of Bashar al-Assad, whom it supported, began strengthening its borders with Syria. Currently, Iraq is constructing a concrete wall along the border.
Iraqi militia groups have launched numerous drone and rocket attacks on US interests in recent years, but these attacks have ceased since last year
The Iraqi government has stated that it does not want to become entangled in the regional conflict.
