ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A huge fire broke out on Mount Nizarke in Duhok province. The reason behind the blaze is unclear.

Firefighting teams are struggling to put off the massive wildfire which threatens nearby houses.

It is not what triggered the fire.

The rugged terrain prevents the civil defense teams from accessing the affected areas.

A large number of security forces and health workers have been deployed to the area.

“We will try to control the fire in the coming hours,” spokesperson for Duhok civil defense told Rudaw.

“Numerous members of security forces and firefighting teams have been deployed to the area,” Bewar Aziz said.

In the hot and dry summer, fires are easily sparked and can spread quickly in the Kurdistan Region.

A massive fire spread across Sulaimani city’s famed Mount Goizha on Monday morning, burning around 200 dunams of land according to early estimates. It was controlled several hours later.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire and whether or not it was arson, according to Sulaimani mayor Awat Mohammed.
