Government statistics show that the population of the Kurdistan Region has been on the decline in recent years with Sulaimani city seeing the lowest population growth.
Iraqi & KRG planning ministries predict a Kurdish population decline to 14.9% by 2020 compared to 18% in 2003
Sirwan Mohammed, Head of Kurdistan Region’s statistics department says this kind of slow growth or decline is not good for a young and nondependent place like the Kurdistan Region.
Iraq’s population is predicted to reach 43 million by 2022 compared to KRG’s 6.5 millions.
