ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Thursday welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and expressed hope that it will contribute towards lasting peace in the region.
“We welcome the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. We hope it will be a step towards lasting peace in the region. Ending violence is the only way to ensure a better future for all,” it said in a statement on X.
A landmark ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was announced on Wednesday which involved negotiations from Qatar, the US, and Egypt, and after 15 months of brutal conflict between both sides.
The presidency also called on relevant parties to adhere to dialogue for the stability of the region.
Palestinian Hamas militants launched a large-scale incursion into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,170 people, according to Israeli figures. Israel responded with a massive ongoing offensive in Gaza, killing more than 46,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The ceasefire involves the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity.
On Wednesday, Iraq’s foreign ministry welcomed the ceasefire agreement as one that came after “great sacrifices” made by Palestinians.
