ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) on Monday launched awards to recognize “innovation excellence” in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
“The inaugural AUIS Innovation Awards 2022 (AIA 2022) will be presented at AUIS on January 13, 2022, recognizing excellence in innovation by individuals as well as entities. The program invites submissions from individuals and institutions that showcase innovative achievements,” read a statement sent to Rudaw English by the university’s communications department.
The awards will put a spotlight on creative, sustainable, innovative solutions with significant “positive impact by proposing better solutions to existing issues facing society,” it added.
“The AIA program shines a light on outstanding achievements in all sectors and creates a platform for Iraqi innovators like never before,” said Hemin Latif, the university’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center (AEIC) director, who is responsible for organizing the event.
Organizers said they welcome everyone to apply and “innovations related to the global pandemic might get recognized as a special mention or category.”
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubakir said he supports the initiative. “It is very important to make use of all the knowledge and information humanity has gained because all the challenges we face today have changed, from local and institutional challenges to global ones,” he said.
AUIS was established in 2007 as a non-profit university that offers a liberal arts education, an unprecedented system for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq at the time. The university offers 12 undergraduate programs, and one master’s program and is an associate member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities (AAIC).
