ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A suspected Iranian drone struck a residential camp belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Erbil province's Koya district late Wednesday, marking the second wave of attacks in a week.
“The Azadi Camp of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan was targeted by an Islamic Republic drone,” the KDPI posted on X, adding that the camp “is located near the town of Koya in the Kurdistan Region and served as a residential area for the families of KDPI members.”
The Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) announced that at 8:22 PM on Wednesday night, Azadi Camp in Koya was targeted by an attack carried out with a single drone, adding that “the attack resulted in no casualties.”
Two locals close to the site also confirmed to Rudaw English that a "loud explosion" was heard.
The attack comes as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated Iraqi militias have targeted the Kurdistan Region with over 1,000 missiles and drones since February 28, the day the US and Israel launched an aerial campaign against Iran, according to Rudaw’s tracking.
Kurdish opposition groups largely sat out of the conflict between Iran and the US and Israel, while their bases and residential areas in the Kurdistan Region have come under repeated attacks. Kurdish leaders have repeatedly said the Kurdistan Region is not a party to the conflict.
However, Kurdistan Regional Government’s Peshmerga forces and civilian structures, including residences of prominent officials such as the President and Prime Minister, have also come under attack.
The KDPI noted on Wednesday that the attack marks the IRGC’s “second wave of drone attacks against KDPI camps this week.”
The party added that KDPI bases and headquarters "have been targeted by more than 164 missiles and drones" since the outbreak of the regional conflict.
Similarly, on Monday the IRGC targeted Azadi camp with three Hadid-110 drones, a senior official of the KDPI told Rudaw English at the time.
