ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday called for a “thorough” investigation into a deadly fuel tanker crash in the Kurdish city of Sna (Sanandaj) in western Iran.
At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured on Saturday evening when a fuel tanker collided with a passenger car on the main Hamadan-Sanandaj highway in Iran’s Kurdistan province, according to local officials and state media.
“The relevant officials must prioritize immediate care for the injured, support for the families, and a thorough investigation into the causes of the incident,” Pezeshkian said in a post on X.
Pezeshkian described the crash as a “bitter incident” and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
The governor of Sanandaj declared two days of public mourning following the deadly crash.
Iran, a country of more than 90 million people, has a high rate of road fatalities. According to Mehr News Agency, 19,540 people died in road accidents in the previous Iranian year, an average of more than 53 deaths per day.
By comparison, Turkey, with a population of about 88 million, recorded around 6,000 road deaths over a similar period, while the European Union, home to roughly 450 million people, recorded about 19,400 road fatalities in 2025.
