ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran's top negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf on Thursday rejected US President Donald Trump's claim that Tehran's frozen assets will be used to buy American agricultural products.
"America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will be used to buy their agriculture," Qalibaf wrote on X, adding that the "only crop we're harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust. It's organic, abundant, and homegrown."
He added, "Apparently the US only exports GMO soybeans, broken promises and trash talks."
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday that "we will be releasing some of their money, that is totally controlled by us, to our Farmers and Ranchers," adding that the funds would go toward purchasing corn, wheat, soybeans, and more. "Food is desperately needed in Iran, and we will be purchasing it for them exclusively from the United States," he said.
The exchange follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Washington and Tehran last week, capping months of negotiations after a six-week war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran that erupted in late February. Talks have since focused on Iran's nuclear program and regional security, including maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
