ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - For more than half a century, the sounds of music and celebration have filled the streets of Harlem each year, reflecting a neighborhood whose culture was shaped by generations of Black Americans confronting discrimination and injustice.
Harlem became a major center of Black life and culture as African Americans, many fleeing racism and segregation elsewhere in the United States, settled in the New York City neighborhood.
Over the decades, Harlem emerged as an influential center of music, art, literature, and political activism, leaving a cultural legacy that extends far beyond New York.
“Harlem is culture. It is community. It is family. It is style... Harlem is the most unique place on earth,” Marco Nobles, who supervises the Harlem Week festival, told Rudaw’s Namo Abdulla.
Music has been central to that legacy.
The neighborhood's Apollo Theater became one of the most important stages for Black performers in the United States. Michael Jackson performed there as a child, while Ella Fitzgerald took the Apollo stage at the age of 17 before becoming one of the defining voices of American jazz.
Harlem was also an important center of Black political activism. Malcolm X delivered speeches in the neighborhood about Black dignity and rights that resonated with oppressed communities around the world.
“[The] Harlem world is like a series of packets of excellence in music,” Josh Friedman, a photographer in Harlem, said.
That legacy is celebrated annually through Harlem Week, which is marking its 52nd edition this year under the theme “Honoring Our Legacy.”
The festival is being held for the first time without Lloyd Williams, one of its founders, who died last year.
For generations, Harlem's Black community transformed adversity into a cultural movement whose influence spread around the world. Music, art, style, and political activism born or nurtured in the neighborhood became enduring parts of American and global culture.
Harlem Week serves both as a celebration of that legacy and a reminder of the community that created it.
