Turkish soldiers clearing mines along its border with ISIS-controlled Syrian territory came under fire on Thursday.
Dogan news agency reported that there were no casualties on the Turkish side. ISIS bullets hit buildings near the border crossing in the southeastern Turkish town of Karkamis. The Turks returned fire with artillery and tanks.
Fire emanating from ISIS-controlled parts of Syria struck Turkish territory last January 18 in Kilis Province. On that occasion a school was hit killing a woman and injuring a student. Turkey responded by bombarding ISIS positions with artillery the following day.
Following the Istanbul attack which killed ten German tourists on January 12, the Turks unleashed barrages of artillery over its border at ISIS-related targets in both Syria and Iraq claiming that they killed 200 ISIS members.
Turkey has been criticized by the U.S. for not taking more steps to close off its remaining 60-mile stretch of border with northwestern Syria, parts of which are still controlled by ISIS.
