ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A commander in the militia of Muqtada al-Sadr has been assassinated north of Baghdad, Iraqi media has reported.

Hussein Hijami, a commander in Sadr’s Saraya al-Salam (Peace Brigades) militia, was shot by unknown gunmen in the al-Shuala area on the northern edge of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad Today reported.

Hijami had been working with the Ministry of Health, an unnamed security source told the news outlet.

The Peace Brigades are a resurrection of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army and were formed in 2014 in response to the rise of ISIS.
