ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a series of sanctions against Turkey over the country’s shooting down of a Russian warplane on November 24, Russian news agencies reported Saturday.
The sanctions include the banning of Turkish imports, Turkish nationals working inside Russia and Turkish companies working in Russia.
A Russian Su-24 jet was shot down by Turkey on November 24. One of the pilots who parachuted from the Su-24 was killed, while another was rescued. Russia has reported that one of its marines involved in the rescue of the downed pilots was also killed during recovery operations.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has refused to apologize to Russian authorities, saying Ankara had exercised its “national duty” in shooting down the Su-24, which Ankara claimed violated its airspace while conducting operations against Syrian rebels near the Turkish border.
The BBC has reported Russia is Turkey's second largest trading partner, and that more than 3 million Russians visited Turkey in 2014.
