ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--In light of a potential Israel-Turkey rapprochement after five years of estrangement Ankara is said to be welcoming the opportunity to once again buy Israeli arms. A report by Today’s Zaman this week said that Ankara has its eye on many Israeli aerial drones and surveillance systems. Both of which they believe will be highly effective for their war against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Israel and Turkey have enjoyed close military, diplomatic and trade relations (Turkey had been part of Israel’s Alliance of the Periphery since the 1950’s) but their ties suffered over the Mavi Marmara incident of 2010 in which Israeli commandos killed 9 Turkish nationals. More recently however, both countries announced that they have agreed to normalize relations and settled on a framework to turn into a formal agreement sometime next year. The Turks have used Israeli-made weaponry in the past in their conflict with the PKK.
