ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Secretary Rex Tillerson’s first meeting in Davos was with Nechirvan Barzani, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, Heather Nauert, said in a press conference on Thursday.
She said that Tillerson later met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
Barzani met Tillerson on Thursday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. He described their meeting as “important.”
“The meeting was certainly important. We talked about our meeting and steps we have taken with Baghdad up to now,” Barzani said.
Barzani added that Tillerson described the start of talks between Erbil and Erbil as a “good opportunity.”
“He was optimistic that we [Baghdad and Erbil] will eventually reach a result,” Barzani said.
She said that Tillerson later met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
