Russia has rejected claims that its recent meetings with Iran and Turkey were to discuss the formation of a three-member coalition to solve crises in the Middle East.

An official from the Russian Foreign Ministry told Rudaw that new agreements between Moscow and Ankara doesn't mean all old problems between them have been resolved.

“Discussions between Russia, Iran and Turkey are a possible way to resolve problems. But this does not mean the formation of a new coalition, but rather a possible discussion on how to establish mechanisms and work together in a more effective way,” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, told Rudaw.

Despite some issues between them Turkey and the United States are still regarded as allies.

Consequently Turkey will not easily ally itself completely with two rivals of the US in the region.

“If ties between Russia and Turkey are getting stronger I think America will try to make problems for their relations because Turkey’s position in the region will have impacts in Syria,” Director of the Center for Public Policy Research in Russia, also told Rudaw.

The ongoing crisis in Syria is the main issue between Russia and Turkey.

If Turkey and Russia do not find common cause on how to solve the crisis in Syria, then relations between them will not reach the point where they become major allies in the region.
