BERLIN, Germany  — Swiss authorities say they have arrested a 24-year-old man who is suspected of seeking to join an Islamic extremist group in Syria or Iraq.

Federal prosecutors say the unidentified man was arrested at Zurich airport Tuesday afternoon as he attempted to board a plane to Istanbul, Turkey.

Prosecutors said in a statement Wednesday that the man, who was from the Zurich region, is suspected of seeking to join either al-Qaida or the Islamic State group, and of supporting a criminal organization.

Last year, Swiss authorities detained three Iraqi citizens on suspicion of supporting the Islamic State group. Prosecutors said they plan to indict the men in the coming months.

Federal prosecutors say they are currently dealing with about two dozen criminal cases related to radical jihadists.
