ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Turkeish pesident lashed out on the leader of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) for his remarks on Kurdish autonomy, calling it a “clear provocation.”
In a live broadcast on Tuesday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas's call for autonomy as “treason.”
“What the co-leader has done is clearly provocation, treason,” AP has quoted Turkish president as saying.
Dogan news agency reported that a Turkish prosecutor has opened an investigation into Demirtas's call for greater self-autonomy in Turkey.
Erdogan said that the HDP will be “taught a lesson” by people and the law, Today Zaman reported on Tuesday.
Erdogan made his Tuesday remarks among the reports at Istanbul airport before heading to Saudi Arabia.
In his party's weekend speech Demirtas called for greater self-rule and governance for the country's more than 15 million Kurds.
Speaking of the large-scale operation by the Turkish military and security forces that has been underway in Diyarbakir and other Kurdish cities for almost a month Demirtas said, “Kurds have to decide whether to live in autonomy or under one man’s tyranny.”
According to an AP report,“The HDP claims a total of 129 civilians had been killed in towns under curfew since August 16, and dozens injured,”
