ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Turkey will seek an Interpol Red Notice for Salih Muslim, CNN Turk reported, one day after issuing an arrest warrant for the co-leader of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).

The country’s justice ministry is preparing to make the application for the Red Notice to the Interpol General Secretary, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Muslim is wanted on alleged connections to a bombing in Ankara in February that killed 28 people. Arrest warrants were also issued for 47 others, including top leaders of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Ankara believes that the PYD and PKK are linked and has labelled both terrorist organizations.

The purpose of a Red Notice is to inform member countries of Interpol that a person is wanted in the country that requests issuance of the notice. It is not an international arrest warrant and the subject of a Red Notice is not wanted by Interpol, the international policing agency states on their website.

A Red Notice is issued at the request of a member country after Interpol completes a compliance check.

The notice gives a case high visibility and can make it difficult for the subject of a notice to travel internationally as police and border officials around the world are alerted to the notice.

The PYD has condemned the arrest warrant, calling the allegations “false, baseless and slanderous” in a statement issued by the party’s general council on Tuesday.

The PYD has denied any involvement in the bombing, responsibility for which was claimed by the PKK splinter group the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK).
