ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Turkey claims that nearly 180,000 Syrian babies have been born to refugee families in Turkey since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Turkey hosts the most Syrian refugees in the world, numbering 3 million. Among them, over 1 million are child refugees, making Turkey the biggest host of child refugees in the world, according to the state-run Anadolu agency.
"Turkey has reached the end of its capacity to absorb [refugees]," Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said in August 2016. "But in the end, these people have nowhere else to go. Either they will die beneath the bombings and Turkey will... watch the massacre like the rest of the world, or we will open our borders."
At least 82,000 Syrian children were admitted to schools at resettlement centers, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has recently reported.
A total of 177,568 Syrians mothers have given birth in Turkey between April 2011 and September 2016, according to Turkey's health ministry figures.
