Turkey has asked coalition partners to take part in a ground operation in Syria. A Turkish official said that a joint ground operation was necessary to bring an end to the Syrian civil war, which is now in its fifth year.

“We want a ground operation with our international allies,” the official said, speaking to reporters in Istanbul. “Without a ground operation it is impossible to stop the fighting in Syria.”

The official ruled out Turkey entering Syria on its own and stressed that such an operation would only take place as a coordinated effort with the United States and other allies. “Turkey is not going to have a unilateral ground operation,” he stated.

These statements come as Turkey has continued shelling the Syrian Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG) across the border for a fourth day. Eye-witnesses report that Turkish troops and tanks are massing on the border opposite Kobani.
