Ankara has expressed its satisfaction with the help the North American Treaty Organization (NATO) alliance (of which it is a member) has given to bolster the defense of its airspace against any further Russian violations.
This comes after another Russian warplane reportedly violated Turkish airspace on Friday. Turkey claims this is despite sending out warnings in both English and Russian.
"An important thing was NATO coming to the forefront. It issued a statement [with Turkey]. Any violation of Turkish airspace is a violation of NATO's airspace and will be addressed accordingly. Our instruction to the Foreign Ministry was to ask Russia to explain this [latest] violation to the NATO Secretary-General," Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu explained to journalists while on his way to Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
"NATO's stance on this issue is satisfactory," he added according to Hurriyet Daily News.
Turkey and Russia have been at loggerheads since the Turkish shoot-down of a Russian bomber which violated its air space for 17 seconds last November. Russia deployed highly sophisticated long-range anti-aircraft missiles to Syria and armed other multi-role jets in Syria with air-to-air missiles following that incident.
