People in the Kurdish city of Qamishli hit the streets on Monday in Syria.
They were celebrating the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq's historic vote on independence.
The Kurdish nation is split across four countries: Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. In Iraq and Syria, Kurdish fighters have been strategic partners of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, serving as a bulwark for the West.
Monday's vote was opposed by neighboring and most international capitals.
