ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The SDF have defeated ISIS in the town of al-Baghuz in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, the force announced on Thursday evening.
“After three days of violent confrontations between our forces and the mercenaries of the terrorist organization, our forces managed today… to complete the liberation of al-Baghuz town and to expel the terrorists from it,” read a statement from the SDF media centre.
Al-Baghuz lies across the Euphrates River from Al Boukamal in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border.
The Kurdish-led force seized a bridge spanning the river near the town on Tuesday.
The SDF with the backing of the international coalition against ISIS are battling the extremist group in their last stronghold in eastern Syria.
Battling for al-Baghuz on Thursday, the SDF faced off ISIS heavy weapons and explosive-laden vehicles. Two SDF fighters were injured by a car bomb and a second was destroyed by coalition aircraft, the force stated.
