ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syrian and Russian warplanes launched a series of airstrikes against opposition forces in Aleppo over the weekend in an attempt to prevent them from launching counter-offensives against regime forces and breaking the siege on their part of that key city.

The wave of airstrikes began on Saturday and continued into Sunday. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights they targeted opposition forces in both Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

An estimated 45 civilians were killed in the raids on Aleppo along with 22 in Idlib province.

Russia is helping the Syrian regime cripple the Jaish al-Fatah, a coalition of Islamist groups opposed to the regime who are fighting to break the siege of opposition-held east Aleppo. Regime forces managed to impose a siege last month when they closed off the Castello Road, the last supply line the opposition had into east Aleppo.

Jaish al-Fatah has vowed to break the siege completely and also to advance on western Aleppo and conquer the whole city.

Shelling carried out by opposition forces on west Aleppo also left an estimated nine civilians dead on Saturday.

The group controls most of Idlib province, which is also its main source of manpower, according to the Observatory.
