ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US and Russia are in "almost daily" talks about their separate military operations in Syria to ensure their forces do not clash.
This is according to Susan Rice, US President Barack Obama's national security advisor, who said so when speaking at the US Air Force Academy on Thursday. Not only are Washington and Moscow working to ensure their air forces do not clash but they are also undertaking joint efforts to ensure violations of the ceasefire, which they brought about last February 27, are investigated.
While both countries have air power operating in Syria they are both dedicated to separate campaigns. US air power leads a multinational coalition whose sole purpose in Syria is to combat the Islamic State (ISIS). Russian air power on the other hand has helped shore up the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and bombed his various opponents.
Russia also maintains a communications mechanism with Israel to ensure they do not clash neither. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly in frequent contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin on these matters.
