A number of families have begun leaving the city of Afrin following the intensification of the Turkish bombardment on the town center.

Hediye Yusuf, a founding member of the self-declared Democratic Federal System of Northern Syria, broke the news of the Turkish bombardment of the city center on Wednesday evening.

“Breaking … war planes of Turkish invading state are heavily bombarding,” Yusuf tweeted.

Families are unlikely to find safety by remaining in Afrin city or by fleeing to the surrounding countryside as Operation Olive Branch forces encircle the town.

Shortages of bread, water and electricity are making life ever harder for civilians.

A video has emerged on social media showing lines of people queuing to buy bread for their families.

The city’s electricity depended on hydroelectric power produced by a dam. It was taken by Turkish forces and their Syrian proxies last week.
