ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Islamic State group has moved large numbers of foreign fighters and weapons into the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor to capture a neighborhood still under regime forces, activists reported Wednesday.

The jihadi group, known as ISIS or IS, has brought in “huge military reinforcement and non-Syrian fighters to the city of Deir Ezzor,” the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

“Reliable sources informed SOHR that IS brought military reinforcement to its-held areas in the city of Deir Ezzor” in eastern Syria, it added. “The reinforcement contains ammunition, equipment, cannons as well as non-Syrian militants.”

The reinforcements were brought in for an attack on the al-Jora neighborhood, which together with the city’s al-Qusour district have been under control of regime forces and under siege since the start of this year, the sources said.
