ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An estimated 100 captives, including Kurdish fighters, have escaped an ISIS-run prison in northern Syria, a monitoring group has reported.
The prison, located in the Syrian district of al-Bab in Aleppo governorate, was breached on Tuesday, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
ISIS militants reportedly announced a high alert in areas around the prison in a bid to recapture the prisoners, many of who are Syrian civilians, Kurdish fighters and forces opposed to Islamic State.
In an attempt to create a so-called “Islamic caliphate,” ISIS militants captured territories in Iraq and Syria and set up their own courts, prisons and other facilities.
Kurdish fighters in Rojava, the name for an ethnically Kurdish part of northern Syria, have been locked in fighting with ISIS for many months.
