The United States department of defense has denied reports that it is building an air base in northern Syria, adding that air drops to groups fighting the Islamic State (ISIS) on the ground will continue.

"We are not building or operating any air bases in Syria," Pentagon Spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters, according to AFP.

Recent reports indicated that the US was building an air base in northern Syria, near the Kurdish city of Qamishlo and not far from a similar base planned by the Russians inside the city’s airport.

Captain Davis added meanwhile that the US will continue delivering ammunition to rebel groups fighting ISIS through the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

"That we have people there and that we have made deliveries there, and that they have to get there by some means should be no secret, but we are not going to comment on the means," Davis said.

In January, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Rmelian airstrip was almost ready to be used by US planes
