KOBANE, Syria – In January 2015, the world gave ISIS its first major defeat – proving the strength and determination of the Kurdish forces backed by the international coalition.
That victory left more than 3,200 buildings destroyed or damaged.
Donors pledged funds to help with reconstruction at international conferences, but the people of Kobane say they haven’t received the promised help to rebuild.
“ISIS destroyed our houses. The mortars hit here. Can’t you see? We have patched everywhere and done what we can without anyone helping us,” Kobane resident Meliha Mohammed told Rudaw.
Another bemoaned the cost of building materials.
It is through the determination of the people that their city is coming back to life.
“We will work and build our house, step-by-step,” said Mohammed Miso.
