BAGHDAD, Iraq – Kurdish independence is the focus of a meeting in Baghdad Tuesday between Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Iraqi President Fuad Masum, who is also a Kurd, sources told Rudaw as the officials met.
Barzani went into the meeting with Masum after talks on Monday with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
KRG spokesperson Safeen Dizayee said Monday that “security, the liberation of Mosul, future relations between Baghdad and Erbil and other relevant topics” were on Barzani’s agenda in Baghdad.
Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have been trying to overcome a string of disagreements. They have resumed talks in hopes of resolving the issues.
A financial crunch on both sides has forced them to resume talks on oil, the Kurdish national budget share which has been held up by Baghdad since 2014, withheld salaries for the Kurdish Peshmerga and the question of Kurdish independence.
