MOSUL, Iraq – Fighting ISIS in the Old Mosul district of west Mosul, the Iraqi Federal Police are inching forward in a battle they expect to be bloody.

According to the Iraqi intelligence service, ISIS dug many tunnels in the historic heart of Mosul, taking a last stand around the mosque where their so-called caliphate was declared. The group’s black flag is still flying over the leaning al-Hadba minaret.

ISIS has entrapped the people living here and does not let them escape.

“They are using children. When they are about to make some move, they bring children with them. This prevents airstrikes,” a police officer said.
