BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb in southern Baghdad killed at least 20 people and wounded 18 others on Saturday, an Iraqi official announced.

“A bomb planted in a Kia-type SUV vehicle exploded this morning in the Nahrawan neighborhood,” said Saad Maan, spokesman of Iraqi forces.

He said the explosion had killed and wounded 38 people.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The bombing came as large protests forced Iraqi government institutions to close down last week, and the Iraqi military deployed armored vehicles and soldiers to the capital's Green Zone and other areas.
