KARBALA, Iraq – Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed at least 18 people and wounded 16 others wounded near Iraq’s holy southern city of Karbala late Sunday.

The attack took place in the Ain Tamr district of Karbala, which contains important Shia shrines and attracts many pilgrims.

“Five suicide bombers attacked a party in the Husseini neighborhood of the Ain Tamr district,” a senior security source told Rudaw in Karbala. “Two of them blew themselves up, killing 18 people,” the source added.

Three other suicide bombers exploded their bombs earlier, officials said.

In a statement published by Amaq news agency, which supports ISIS, claims that four suicide bombers carried out the attack against a “gathering of Shiites.”

“The terrorist attack happened in Ain Tamr, then we immediately arrived at the place of the attack and with Iraqi army responded the attack,” said Haj Abu Mustafa, a commander of the Saraya al-Salam militia that belongs to the Sadr Front.
