ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Islamic State, or ISIS, has executed more than 3,000 people in Syria, including hundreds of civilians, in the year since it declared its self-described "caliphate," according to The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group monitoring Syria's conflict, said it had been documenting executions by ISIS since June 29, 2014.
“The latest Islamic State statistics indicate the group has executed 3,027 people in different places held by them, among those executed are 1,787 civilians, including 74 children and 86 women,” said the group on Monday.
According to the monitor: “Among the victims at the hands of the Islamic State during a year, 216 militants from Syrian Free Army, 881 from the Syrian government and some 4,000 from the Kurdish parties have been killed.”
Meanwhile, at least 8,000 ISIS militants have been killed in battles and by US-led coalition air strikes, added the monitor.
It is has been more than a year since ISIS militants overran the Iraqi city of Mosul. ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the Islamic State a caliphate on June 29, 2014, the first day of Ramadan last year.
