ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US confirmed the death of an American soldier supporting Iraqi armed forces from wounds sustained in an explosion outside the embattled city of Mosul on Saturday.

A statement by combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve detailed “A U.S. service member died from wounds sustained in an explosive device blast outside of Mosul, Iraq, Apr. 29, 2017.”

The statement also said that “further information will be released as appropriate.”

It is not the first time a US service man has been killed on the ground during the fight against ISIS in Nineveh province as in May 2016 a US NAVY SEAL was killed when ISIS launched a multi-pronged massive assault against the Peshmerga in the town of Tel Kaif, north of Mosul.

While the US previously had troops in combat roles in Iraq, now all forces serve in "advice and assist roles," and train Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the fight against the ISIS. The Coalition has also said that they defend themselves by all means available

To date the US has suffered four combat casualties since returning to Iraq to fight ISIS.
