BARTELLA, Iraq --An Iraqi soldier posing with a cross next to a local captured the country’s imagination. He was standing in the liberated Christian town of Bartella, east of Mosul, which had been controlled by the Islamic State for more than two years.

ISIS had ransacked some churches inside the town, writing its motto “Enduring and Expanding” on the walls of a church.
