ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The United Nations mission in Iraq has expressed ‘deep concern’ over the latest demonstrations in the capital Baghdad where angry protestors breeched the walls of the Green Zone for the second time in less than a month on Friday, calling for calm.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubis said in a statement on the mission’s website, “What happened on Friday shows how events could take a different turn and escalate, causing casualties,”

Kubis called for calm and a political solution that could address Iraq’s challenges and people’s grievances.

“Restoring calm is key for Iraq to be able to move forward in finding a political solution based on inclusive consultations to resume the work of the united parliament to confirm without delay a reformed government that is able and willing to proceed with the reforms that will address the priorities and challenges the country and the people face, first of all fighting Daesh in unity.” Kubis’ statement read.

The United Nations and the US embassy are among major foreign missions based inside the heavily fortified Green Zone where protestors first broke into on April 30 and stormed the parliament building.

The UN representative went on to say, “Only the enemies of Iraq, Daesh at the forefront, benefit from chaos. We are certain the patriotic Iraqis will not allow this to happen,”
