ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Thousands of volunteers have joined the Iraqi Army to participate in anti-ISIS campaign in Sunni-dominated province of Anbar, Sabah Karhut, head of the provincial council, announced on Saturday.

“At least 7,000 volunteers have been registered to join the army and participate in liberation of Ramadi,” Karhut said.

Iraqi forces, backed by Shiite militias, and with support from local Sunni tribesmen have been struggling to recapture areas lost to the radical group in Iraq’s largest province of Anbar.

“To fully control Anbar we need at least 20,000 soldiers to protect civilians and prevent threats pose by Daesh,” he added, using Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Karhut evaluated the current situation of Anbar as improving with army and security forces allegedly ready to recapture Ramadi and ISIS-held areas of Anbar province.

Last month, the extremists recorded a spectacular victory, overrunning Ramadi and capturing large amounts of ammunition and armored vehicles from fleeing Iraqi troops.
