ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Islamic State (ISIS) has killed six doctors in the city of Mosul for refusing to treat wounded fighters, a Kurdish official said.

“Their only crime was refusing to treat wounded men from ISIS,” Ismat Rajab, an official from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) told Rudaw, adding the doctors were killed on Sunday.

Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, came under ISIS control in June after the Iraqi army fled, leaving residents at the mercy of the notorious group.

Meanwhile, Rudaw has learned that the militants have captured six merchants for not paying the monthly tax imposed by ISIS throughout the areas it controls. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

All merchants are required to pay the tax, which go toward funding ISIS’ campaigns.  Shopkeepers have faced increasing pressure to pay the levy or face death. However, the lion’s share of ISIS funds come from oil sales to locals and crude smuggled across borders.

In addition, the militants have killed two university professors for reasons yet unknown and beheaded US aid-worker Peter Kassig.
