ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – An estimated 13,000 people displaced from Mosul have returned to their homes in neighbourhoods that have been liberated from ISIS, said Ziya Salal, director general within the Iraqi ministry of migration and displaced.
The number of IDPs (internally displaced persons) who have been returned to their homes is 2,504 families who were staying in Jadda 2, Khazir, Dibaga, and Gogjali camps, Salal detailed.
Families have also returned to villages and towns south of Mosul, Salal explained, namely 1016 families returned to Shora, 30 families returned to Qayara, and 65 families returned to villages around Nimrud and Sharqat.
One hundred thousand people have been displaced from their homes since the offensive to evict ISIS from Mosul began on October 17, Iraq’s migration minister said earlier this week.
“The total number of IDPs has reached 100,000 as a result of the operation to liberate Mosul,” Darbaz Muhammed told Rudaw. “We have accommodation for 120,000 IDPs.”
