ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iran’s foreign ministry offered its congratulations to the people of Iraq for elections that “strengthened the achievements and victories the Iraqi nation gained in the fight against terrorism.”

“The people of Iraq showed that they can play a key role in consolidating Iraq’s stability, tranquility and thriving economy as well as regional security under the guidance of religious scholars and through national unity,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Qassemi in a published statement on Monday.

He added that Iran is ready to help with the “development and construction” of its neighbor.

Iran enjoys a lot of influence in Iraq, including through its backing of Shiite militia groups. An alliance of these groups, the Fatih Alliance, emerged as a surprise second place in the May 12 parliamentary elections.

Results for 16 of Iraq’s 18 provinces have so far been announced. The Fatih Alliance garnered the most votes in four provinces and came second in seven provinces.

These results put the Fatih Alliance in second place nationwide, after the Sayirun alliance of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and the Communist Party.
